Problem Gambling Advocates issue guidelines for college sports betting partnerships
The National Council on Problem Gambling A set of guidelines for college sports betting partnerships were released this week.
The NCPG published a report and a number of recommendations too Tuesday midst Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
NCPG executive Director Keith Whyte said the guidelines come as part of the larger Safer Sports Betting Initiative Support in building a “sustainable and healthy gaming ecosystem”.
The move is designed to help curb a potential increase in problem gambling among young adults. According to the council, students and athletes in particular are more prone to problem gambling.
“They are at greater risk for high risk behavior, largely due to their age and lack of maturity,” Whyte said. “But never in their life or in US history has there been so much advertising, access, action and acceptance from sports betting.”
College Sportsbook Partnership Guidelines
As colleges and sports betting operators begin to sign partnerships, the NCPG suggests avoiding incentives based on signups, participation and revenue, handling, or profit targets.
Other operator guidelines are:
- A minimum of 1% of income to prevent and treat gambling addiction.
- Comprehensive training of employees on responsible gambling.
- Ability to set time and money restrictions on betting.
- Partners with universities to protect and train athletes.
- Provide data on betting activity and patterns to universities.
- Strict verification of the gate of old age and operations that go beyond self-verification.
Universities also take responsibility
The NCPG also suggests that universities should also be responsible for responsible sports betting partnerships.
These guidelines include:
- Do not accept enrollment incentives or financial goals.
- Encourage affiliates to have a formal responsible gaming policy.
- Provide training and education to sports departments and athletes.
- Include gambling guidelines in students’ codes of conduct.
- Set standards for advertising and promoting sports betting on campus and universities.
- Offer problem gambling treatments on campus.
Most of the recommendations are aimed at universities and operators, but also at the governments of the states.
- Conduct gambling participation and addiction surveys for high school and college students to sports betting so that adjustments can be made.
- At least provide 1% from sports betting revenue to tackle problem gambling.
- Establish responsible rules of the game for operators and providers.
